Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Optimising content so AI assistants cite it inside generated answers.

GEO

Definition

Generative engine optimization is the practice of structuring content, entities and evidence so that large language model assistants — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and open-source equivalents — select and cite a source when generating an answer.

Where classic SEO optimises for a ranked position on a results page, GEO optimises for inclusion in a synthesised response, where typically two to five sources are named.

Why it matters

An increasing share of research-stage queries resolve inside an assistant. A page that never appears as a cited source is invisible on that surface regardless of its organic ranking.

How to apply it

  • Lead each section with a direct, quotable answer.
  • Attach dates, figures and methodology to claims you want reused.
  • Publish structured data that mirrors the prose.
  • Track a fixed prompt panel weekly and record which domains get cited.
